Texas high speed rail project gains national attention

COLLEGE STATION, Tex. - (KBTX) A high speed rail project between Houston and Dallas is getting national attention after it was listed as a priority to President Trump.

College Station's City Council wanted to know more about the rail line.

Questions continue to surface about the future of a high speed train that would pass through the Brazos Valley, even for those working on the project.

Jeff Moseley works for Texas Central Partners and said Trump's administration did not reach out, but noted they have gained national attention.

"This is a conversation that we've been carrying on with the federal government for years," said Moseley.

Moseley is giving a presentation to the College Station City Council. Council member Blanche Brick organized the meeting.

"To allow us to better inform the people in this community of the good and maybe the challenges," said Brick.

According to Texas Central, the project is privately funded and will cost an estimated $10 billion. They are nearing completion of environmental impact statements needed to break ground.

Many in the Brazos Valley have been outspoken for and against the project, especially when it comes to its location.

"We will have discussion. They will present all of the good things about it, and people will also raise some of their concerns about it,” said Brick.

Moseley said the large project lends itself to a lot of questions.

"Of course there may be questions that we may ultimately need the court of law to iron out,” said Moseley.

If the project moves forward, the 200 mile per hour train would open up travel between the Brazos Valley, Houston, and Dallas.

"It will really help the Brazos Valley especially having that kind of connectivity and dependable transportation,” said Moseley.

Judges in both Grimes and Waller County are against this project. They call the list of transportation projects highlighted by the Trump administration a falsehood.
