Small Texas oil towns make big showing on most prosperous U.S. city list

Some may think that the most prosperous cities in the U.S. would include Houston, Dallas or Austin. Not by a long shot. The West Texas oil city of Odessa ranked No. 1 for prosperity between 2000 and 2016 according to a recent study by RentCafé Blog. The oil town of 117,000 people in the heart of West Texas’ Permian Basin oil field rose to No. 1 as its population expanded by 25 percent, income increased 38 percent, home values spiked 91 percent and the poverty rate plunged 36

Hyperloop or high-speed rail: Which will whoosh through Texas first?

North Texas planners are getting serious about deploying a technology known as Hyperloopthat promises to whisk riders from Dallas to Fort Worth in only six minutes — traveling in a giant tube in a futuristic system that, if successful, could redefine intercity transportation. But those same Metroplex planners also are pursuing plans for building high-speed rail plans (similar to systems used in Europe and Asia) in the same corridors connecting Fort Worth, Arlington and Dallas

Army Corps approves deepening, widening of Virginia's port

NORFOLK, VA. The federal government has given the final greenlight for widening and deepening the commercial shipping lanes that serve the Port of Virginia. The port said Monday in a statement that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers gave its final authorization for the project. It will allow the world's increasingly massive cargo ships to carry more cargo and move more quickly. A channel that will allow two-way traffic also will better accommodate ships from the world's largest

Study Puts Virgin’s Hyperloop One Plan Ahead of Regional Competition

The feasibility and environmental study for the high-speed route from Columbus, Ohio, to Chicago is another step toward making the interstate route a reality. (TNS) — Feasibility and environmental impact studies will be done on Virgin Hyperloop One's proposed route connecting Columbus, Chicago and Pittsburgh. The federally required environmental impact study is to be finished by July 2019. Engineering firm WSP USA will collect data while reviewing existing conditions along th

Austin, Texas, Transit Agency Considers Electric, Driverless Shuttles Downtown

By fall, a 12-month pilot program with Cap Metro could have six driverless shuttles bustling around downtown Austin. (TNS) — Downtown Austin, Texas, could see pod-like driverless shuttles by the end of the year under a pilot program Capital Metro is considering. The agency, according to a presentation to be given to the Capital Metro board Monday afternoon, foresees having a fleet of six electric, autonomous shuttles running a route between the MetroRail station on East Fourt

Cybercrime regulations over ‘smart’ connected vehicles and its impact on civil liability

Futuristic technology is increasingly permeating into vehicle dashboards, and this allows OEM companies and 3PLs to wire into these systems and gather millions of data points over the course of the vehicle’s lifetime. Though it can be argued that a part of the data can be used for analytics which in turn would help to improve the vehicle’s overall efficiency, some of the data sets could also tiptoe into the privacy of the person behind the wheel - which is a serious concern.

Drones to monitor traffic on Ohio smart corridor

DriveOhio will use unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) to understand how to manage traffic, roadway incidents and roadway conditions along the 33 Smart Mobility Corridor beginning July 1. The three-year $5.9 million project is intended to complement autonomous and connected vehicle tests along the 35-mile stretch between Dublin and East Liberty in Ohio. This study stems from a partnership between DriveOhio’s UAS Center and the Ohio State University College of Engineering. The res

Study finds bike sharing could increase light-rail transit ridership

Using math and computer modeling, University of Waterloo researchers studied ways to couple bike-share programs with public transit Coupling bike-share with public transit could be an important component when trying to increase light rail transit (LRT) ridership, according to a new study out of the University of Waterloo. In their study, researchers from Waterloo explored the most efficient size of a bike pool that would ensure enough bikes would be available to commuters who

These Smarter Stoplights Could Be Lifesavers

New traffic signals in Detroit are designed to help pedestrians, cyclists and ambulances get through intersections, while helping traffic planners test safety improvements quickly. Five years ago, nobody would have mistaken Detroit’s stoplights for being “smart.” They were so obsolete, in fact, that city transportation officials couldn’t even tell whether most of the lights were working without visiting the intersections in person. But in solving that very basic problem, the
