The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) today announced the designation of nine Marine Highway Projects and a Marine Highway Route that, together, will benefit Connecticut, Florida, Michigan, New York, Oregon, Texas, Virginia, Washington State and American Samoa. Marine highways are navigable waterways that can be used as alternate options to traditional shipping methods. “The designation of marine highways by Congress will help move cargo and

Raising the Bar: Platform Extensions – Federal Funding Secured

It’s been a while since we last discussed DART’s planned platform extensions that will increase capacity throughout the system and improve mobility for the thousands of DART riders in the North Texas region. In Part Five of our series, Raising the Bar: Platform Extensions, we want to provide a quick but important update on where things stand from a funding perspective. Big News In late June, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration (FTA) awarded

WATCH: How Drones Could Revolutionize the Supply Chain

A new video from CNBC demonstrates how autonomous drones could revolutionize the supply chain and provide much-needed disruption to an industry that has remained largely unchanged since the 1950s. In the video, titled ‘How Drones Could Change The Shipping Industry’, CNBC talks to a host of supply chain experts and tech entrepreneurs that believe the answer to many problems in cargo transportation could be autonomous drones. 47 percent gain for East Coast ports in past 10 years, report finds East Coast seaports captured nearly 49 percent of all U.S. 20-foot equivalent unit (TEU) container traffic in 2018, nearly a 47 percent gain over the past 10 years and more than 2.5 times the growth of West Coast ports during that time, according to data published on Thursday, July 18 by the real estate and logistics services giant JLL, Inc. New Terminal To Cut Into Harbor Island in Port Aransas

A new plan for a proposed oil and gas terminal on Harbor Island could reduce cost and opposition from an environmental group in Port Aransas, according to information released at a Port of Corpus Christi commissioners meeting July 16. Rather than building docks parallel to the island, the port proposes to dig into the land itself, dredging out a path for Very Large Crude Carriers to turn into the island and away from the Corpus Christi Channel. Will IMO 2020 pull Asia containers from East to West Coast?

The Panama Canal is designed as a shortcut. It’s the most impressive shortcut ever built in the history of mankind. For shippers sending U.S. liquefied natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas to Asia, it drastically reduces voyage time. But when it comes to Asian containers being shipped to the U.S., the Panama Canal is not a shortcut. Between Shanghai, China and the Port of Prince Rupert, Canada (which connects via rail to Chicago), it’s 4,678 nautical miles. Between Shangha

This last-mile delivery startup wants to put robots in bike lanes

A whole host of startups have launched in recent years with the aim of making last-mile deliveries using robots. But a company from Michigan has a new spin on this familiar enterprise: it wants to put those bots in bike lanes, at least part of the time. Refraction AI came out of stealth last week, unveiling its autonomous delivery robot REV-1 onstage at a TechCrunch event. The company’s co-founder and CEO Matthew Johnson-Roberson, a University of Michigan professor, described

Bicycle turn boxes could be a new way to keep cyclists safe

Bicycle turn boxes are coming to Lee County next month and could appear at intersections in Collier County in the future. The boxes, which aim to help cyclists make safer left turns, will appear in August at the intersection of Treeline Avenue and Daniels Parkway in Lee County. Although there are currently no plans to install turn boxes in Collier County, cycling advocates and county planners say the feature could be a new safety tool for local governments.
