‘Supernatural’ Star Jensen Ackles Partners with the Texas Department of Transportation for Distracte

Jensen Ackles is well-known for his role as Dean Winchester on the hit TV show Supernatural. In the show, Dean cruises across America behind the wheel of a classic 1967 Chevrolet Impala, alongside his brother, Sam. While the two brothers might be daredevils on the show, Jensen Ackles is outspoken about the dangers of distracted driving. This week, Jensen partnered with the Texas Department of Transportation — his home state — to do a PSA for its “Heads up, Texas” campaign.

In the TxDOT ad spot, the Supernatural star points out the obvious dangers of distracted driving, including running stop signs and swerving on the road. But as an added incentive, Jensen mentions a new Texas law. Implemented in September 2017, it is now illegal to read, write, or send a text behind the wheel in Texas.

Distracted driving is a nationwide problem, but the TxDOT has been taking a closer look at its impact on the Lone Star State. In 2017, 19 percent of vehicle crashes in Texas involved distracted driving — nearly one in five. This statistic has remained true for the last three years; looking at the data, the TxDOT decided it was time to do something about it.

The “Heads up, Texas” campaign is working with AT&T’s “It Can Wait” campaign to spread awareness for the growing problem. But this isn’t the first time Jensen has made a public statement about distracted driving. Back in 2013, Jensen and his co-star Jared Padalecki partnered directly with the “It Can Wait” campaign, taking the pledge to never text and drive.
