Amazon’s Rekognition software can now detect what emotion?

The company announced the addition as part of a recent update to the facial analysis features of its controversial face recognition software. This marks the eighth emotion that Rekognition is able to pick out; the other seven are angry, calm, confused, disgusted, happy, sad and surprised. Other updates to the system’s facial analysis capabilities include improved age estimation and gender identification.

These updates come amid increasing backlash against facial recognition software, particularly its use by law enforcement. Civil rights advocates like the ACLU have expressed concerns that the technology comes with built-in bias against minority groups, and that it needs significant improvement before authorities should be allowed to use it.
